BURNTWOOD RUGBY CLUB

Following on from the sponsored walk a week earlier in aid of Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby, Burntwood Rugby Club’s mini/youth section took their chance to add to the season long fundraising activities when they participated in a relay race against a Chasewater Railway train.

The colts’ squad ran the initial leg from Brownhills West Station before passing the ball on to younger players along the dam wall until the U9s and U8s scored the try back at the club’s CCE Sportsway clubhouse.

The rugby ball carried by the train made it back one minute and nineteen seconds earlier having altered the normal timetable to travel directly to Chasetown Church Street without making its normal two stops.

A sweepstake on the time difference between the return of the two balls was well-supported by club members who enjoyed the spectacle as part of the club’s Presentation Day.

A total of over £900 was raised for the sponsored walk and the relay race to add to the donations made during the season meaning that a four figure sum will be presented to the charity.

Club President Rob Forsyth thanked all those who contributed to the funds and especially the adults and junior members who took part in the two fundraising events.

This was the final act celebrating the club’s 50th Anniversary season and preparations are already underway for season 2023-24.
